The Artist
Biography
Andrew Smith is a painter who lives and works in Ottawa, Ontario. He received his BFA in 1999 and MFA in 2010 from the University of Ottawa. His works have been exhibited in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. Some of those works now belong to private collections as well as to Global Affairs Canada, The City of Ottawa Public Art Collection, and RBC-DEXIA, London, U-K.
Artistic Approach
Andrew’s recent painting incorporates a variety of applications using a plywood surface. By carving into the surface, layering paper cutouts, inkjet transfers, acrylic paint, and wax, he attempts to create tactile image scenarios. It is his intention to show how an interplay between how the painting is made and what is suggested as an image that is presented as an evidence of that activity.
